WHAT ARE THE G OALS OF B ’NAI JACO B RELI G IOUS SCHOOL ?

  1. Provide students the skills they need to live a Jewish life – knowledge of Torah, Jewish rituals, customs, life cycles, holidays, literature, history and belief, Synagogue skills, and Hebrew language skills.
  1. Develop within our students a love of K’lal Yisrael and a tolerance of the diversity that lies within Judaism and the world.
  1. Establish a relationship with Israel , the people and the land.
  1. Promote a sense of community within Congregation B ’nai Jacob, and to possess an appreciation of the Synagogue as a House of Prayer, House of Assembly and a House of Study.
  1. Help students identify and develop their own Jewish identity.

Please join us in providing a meaningful Jewish education for our youth, by committing yourself to these goals. With your assistance our children will be brought to understand and to appreciate the values, ideals, and traditions of our Jewish way of life.

HOMEWORK

The home can play a decisive role in the motivation of the student, inculcating a love for Judaism and a love for learning.  Homework may be assigned for more than one subject.  To ensure a quality education it is imperative that both students and parents respect this reinforcement of academia.  It is expected that students who are absent make every effort to complete all assignments.

PARENTS CAN HELP

  • Acquaint yourself with your child’s texts and program.  Let your child know you are familiar with them.
  • Discuss the daily happenings and events of the religious school with your children.  Motivate your children by impressing upon them a love of Judaism and a love of learning.
  • Observe the holidays in your home: the Shabbat evening rituals, the Passover Seder, the Chanukkah lighting, etc.
  • Equip your home with appropriate ceremonial objects: Kiddush cup, candlesticks, mezuzah, chanukkiyah, etc.

REPORT TO PARENTS

The report card will be sent home twice a year, once in January and once in May.  It is the aim of these formal reports to give the parents an idea as to the progress of their children.  The report card is not intended to be the only account of a student’s progress.  Feel free to speak to your child’s teachers or Principal at any time.

SETH HORWITZ CAMP SCHOLARSHIP

The Seth Horwitz Camp Scholarship has been established in memory of Seth Horwitz who was a student in our religious school.  Seth was a bright and eager student who had a love of learning and an enthusiasm for life.  This scholarship is so named for his spirit to encourage the young people in our religious school to attend overnight Jewish summer camp.  Each fall students enrolled in our Hebrew program may apply for this scholarship by writing some form of creative expression (e.g. essay, poem, short story…) based on the theme announced for that year.  Students who apply will be awarded a subsidy towards their camp fee by winter break.  Please note that each student will be allowed to apply only once during the Hebrew School years.
